Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) Overview


Assurance: Research involving human participants at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System is conducted under a Federal Wide Assurance (^00004435) which affirms the commitment of the institution to adhere to regulations designed to provide protections for human participants.  Accordingly, all research involving human participants will be reviewed by a special committee (called the Institutional Review Board) in order to ensure that all applicable human research protections are in place and that there is compliance with all applicable policies, regulations, and laws pertaining to human research participation. In addition, the VALBHS maintains a Human Research Protection Program that closely monitors all human research studies on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance. 

Institutional Review Board (IRB) The Institutional Review Board is a committee, based at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System/that reviews research projects involving human participants. The IRB is responsible for ensuring that a proposed research study will be executed in a manner that protects the rights and welfare of human participants.

Human Research Protection Program (HRPP): The HRPP is a program, based at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System that closely monitors the overall program of research involving human participants in order to ensure compliance with applicable regulations, to monitor the ongoing conduct of a study, and to protect the rights and welfare of human participants.

Belmont Report (PDF): The Belmont Report provides a summary of the basic ethical principles identified by the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research; this document constitutes a statement of basic ethical principles and guidelines which can be used to assist in resolving the ethical problems that may be encountered in the conduct of research involving human participants. 

Our HRPP program is designed to protect the rights and welfare of persons who participate in research programs administer and conducted at the Veterans Administration Long Beach Healthcare System (VALBHS).

This program operates under Federal wide Assurance number FWA00004435.
